SQUADRON BOATING COURSE®
The Boating Course, presented by the Fox Valley Sail & Power Squadron, is an
introduction to the fundamental tools required for the SAFE OPERATION of sail
and power watercraft. Instructors are all experienced boaters. Subjects
covered include types of boats, boat handling under normal and adverse
conditions, navigation rules, aids to navigation, knots and lines, nautical
charts, basic piloting techniques, docking, proper operation of marine radio,
boat trailering, operation of safety equipment, safe operation of personal
watercraft and relevant State and Federal regulations. This course meets the
standards of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and
includes a proctored exam as required by many states and insurance companies for
both youth certification (for operation of motor driven watercraft without adult
supervision) and discounted insurance rates. A $50 fee for course materials
(which may be shared by families) is payable to the instructor on the first
night of class.
BOAT SMART®
COURSE
Boat Smart is a
5-week course
presented by the Fox Valley Sail and Power Squadron is
appropriate for individuals and families who operate, or plan to operate, sail
or power watercraft on the area’s lakes and waterways. Experienced
Instructors will provide a basic introduction to SAFE BOATING which will
familiarize the student with the fundamentals of boat types, boat handling,
navigation rules, navigation aids, personal safety on the water, proper
operation of safety equipment, and relevant laws and regulations in Illinois.
This course meets the standards of the National Association of State Boating Law
Administrators and includes a proctored exam as required by many states and
insurance companies for youth certification (ages 12-17) and discounted
insurance rates. A course materials fee of $25 will be collected
at the beginning of the first class. Family members may share a single
course materials packet if they wish.
