WELCOME!
Fox Valley is a member of the United States Power
Squadrons®, the world's
largest private boating organization. We received our charter in December
1970 as an extension of the Evanston Power Squadron.
Organized
in 1914, USPS is a non profit, educational organization dedicated to making
boating safer and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation
and related subjects. Our members are boating families who contribute to their
communities by promoting safe boating through education. We enjoy participating
with our fellow members on the water and in the classroom. USPS has some 60,000
members organized into 33 Districts and 450 squadrons across the country and in
some US territories. USPS is America's largest non-profit boating organization
and has been honored by three US presidents for its civic contributions.
Fox Valley began as an extension of the Evanston Power Squadron/District
20.
The charter creating a separate squadron was granted 7 December 1970.
Each squadron's activities involve the three primary objectives
of USPS: community service, continuing education, and enjoying the friendship
and camaraderie of our fellow members.
EDUCATION
"I do solemnly pledge myself...to promote and perpetuate...high
standards of navigation and seamanship."
...member's pledge.
We all took the Pledge as members of the United
States Power Squadrons®. Education is one of our primary
reasons for existence. Fox Valley Sail and Power Squadron has always taken
pride in its educational efforts. For many years, this Squadron has taught
every course USPS offers. The awarding of D20's Prince Henry Award
has recognized our effort many times.
In keeping with the tradition of "high standards
of navigation and seamanship." Fox Valley Sail and Power Squadron annually
offers a series of educational courses designed to encourage the study of boat
handling, seamanship and the science of navigation to the public and as advanced
grades to USPS members. These courses are held
in the Northwest Fox River Valley Suburbs of Chicago, primarily in the Elgin, Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg and
Palatine communities and as far northwest as Hampshire, IL.
CIVIC
Our civic
contribution is demonstrated by the number and quality of our Public Boating
Courses. These courses, held in the Northwest Suburbs, primarily in the
Elgin, Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg and Palatine, Illinois communities are given
free of charge through the volunteer efforts of our squadron members. (there is
a nominal charge for books and materials, and may include a nominal charge for
location expenses) We also provide information to the boating public through
informational booths at several boat shows and our participation during National
Safe Boating Week and at the Annual July 4th Parade in Fox Lake, Illinois.
SOCIAL
Social activities include several cruises during the summer
months on the Chain of Lakes in north central Illinois and Lake Michigan and monthly dinner meetings from September through May. We have
guests at each meeting who speak on boating related topics. Though our
membership is spread far and wide, we try to hold our dinner meetings in the
Elgin/Schaumburg area which has convenient access to major highways not to
mention great restaurants, though we have been know to haunt our favorite venues
in Carpentersville and McHenry, Illinois. This is your
opportunity to make life-long friends that share your love of boating.
